Fourways at a glance

Originally a rural area before adopting the moniker Fourways, this district spanned 245 hectares (605 acres) as a residence and game farm owned by the Eriksen family. The estate, constructed in the early 1940s, was christened Norscot Manor, amalgamating the family's Norwegian and Scottish heritage. Although designed in the classic Cape Dutch style, the immense size and irregular shape deviate from traditional Cape Dutch architecture.

Over time, portions of the estate were sold off, and the stately manor was bequeathed to the City Council of Johannesburg in the 1970s. The planned suburb surrounding the manor was named 'Norscot.' Presently, Norscot Manor Recreation Centre occupies the renovated manor, primarily functioning as a library but also encompassing an art gallery, hosting dance lessons, martial arts sessions, a playground, and a tea garden. The manor received 'blue plaque' heritage status from the City of Johannesburg in 2015, underscoring its historical significance.

The nomenclature 'Fourways' originated from the four-way stop junction of William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road. This identifier is now symbolized by two four-way roundabouts along Kingfisher Drive, the primary thoroughfare in Greater Fourways. Fourways has experienced significant growth since the 1990s. It has transformed into a bustling node with rapid urban development, evolving from farmland into a sought-after residential and commercial hub.

Fourways now boasts a diverse range of residential and commercial options, including gated communities, estates, townhouses, apartments and secure office parks. The area caters to various lifestyles and preferences. In terms of commercial spaces, it offers a mix of sectional title and freehold offices to rent or for sale, shopping centres, and close by industrial parks, attracting businesses of different scales.

Fourways consists of multiple suburbs and estates, including Fourways central, Magaliessig, Norscot, Pineslopes, Lonehill, Beverley, Craigavon, Broadacres and Dainfern. The creation of estates like Cedar Creek Estate, Cedar Lakes, Fourways Gardens, Dainfern Golf Estate, Dainfern Valley, Dainfern Ridge, and Fernbrook Estate has been prompted by the city's elevated crime rates.

These Estates are oriented around family-centric ideals and parks, with Fourways Gardens featuring a former zebra habitat and blue crane sanctuary. The weather in Fourways tends to be warmer compared to southern regions, enjoying temperatures akin to those in Pretoria due to its proximity.

Notably, the Fourways Nature Reserve houses the Norscot Koppies, while Lonehill and Beverley accommodate another koppie within the Lonehill Nature Reserve, known as the Lonehill Koppie.

In addition to the more established and prestigious suburbs like Westcliff and Sandhurst, Fourways hosts some of the metropolitan area's most coveted and high-value residences.

Fourways Central serves as the entertainment precinct, offering shopping centers such as Design Quarter, Fourways Mall, Montecasino, Fourways Crossing, Pineslopes Shopping Centre and Cedar Square. Fourways Central is the preferred location for business due to its primary entryways via the N1 Freeway at R511 Winnie Mandela Drive or along R564 Witkoppen Road.

Fourways Central offers a variety of offices to rent, from B-grade to P-grade offices, serviced offices to independently managed offices. Many of the office parks now offer backup power support and backup water tanks to accommodate tenants when a shortage may occur. Popular office parks in Fourways Central includes Fourways Office Park, Cedar Tree Office Park, Cedar Office Estate, Fourways Golf Park, Fourways Manor Office Park, Whitehills Junction Office Park, Pineslopes Office Park and Fourways View Office Park.
